ABOUT
Every candle has already lived one life.
It started in the 1980s, in a kitchen, with a teenage girl and a little pot on the stove. My mum adored floating candles — it was very much the era — and she would hand me old stubs and broken dinner candles to melt down. We used simple string for wicks. We poured something new from something forgotten.

Over the years, what started as a small act of love became something I couldn't stop doing. Not just because I love candles — but because of what happens when you rescue something discarded and give it a second chance to shine.
Why recycled wax?
I'll be honest: I have a bit of a hero complex. I love to save things that can be restored. There is something so moving about working with wax that has already been present at a wedding, a school dance, a Sunday service — wax that was witness to tears and laughter and quiet moments of reflection. When I collect discarded wax from churches, homes, and gatherings across the KZN Midlands, I'm not just sourcing material. I'm honouring the stories those candles already hold.

The Process
How a candle actually gets made
Step 1
Sourcing
I collect wax from around the KZN Midlands — churches, weddings, school dances, everyday homes. Every batch arrives carrying a little piece of someone else's story.
Step 2
Sorting
Each batch gets sorted into vintage lockers by colour and wax type. Softer waxes for jar candles, harder for dinner candles. This step matters more than people think.
Step 3
Cleaning & Melting
Everything is washed, scraped, and filtered, then melted slowly at low temperatures to preserve the colour and character of the wax. I remove the impurities. I try to keep the soul.
Step 4
Making
Every candle type demands a different technique — the right wick, the right temperature, the right moment to pour. No shortcuts, and no two exactly alike.
Step 5
Nothing wasted
Even the scraps find a purpose. Offcuts that can't become candles are collected and turned into firelighters. Not a single bit of wax gets thrown away.
Our Candle Collection
Dinner Candles
Completely handmade, in two beautiful forms. Elegant, long-burning, and coloured by hand — including our signature splattered finishes.
- Tall moulded candles (38cm) — longer burn (±15 hours)
- Hand-dipped candles (30cm) — around 8 hours, non-drip
- Colours are mixed by hand, so no two batches match exactly
- Almost any colour under the sun
Eco Resin candle holders available by request.
Jar Candles
Each jar contains wax from various recycled candles — blended with a touch of fresh soy wax for a clean, even burn. Which means even with the same scent, each one burns in its own quietly unique way.
Available in two vessels: a clear glass jar with a cork lid, or a handmade eco-resin container in four earthy colourways — Ivory, Nguni, Aloe, and Granite. Each candle is individually hand-labelled, boxed, and ready to give as a gift straight off the shelf.

Vintage
Some vessels are too beautiful to use just once. The Dirty Candle Co Vintage Range pairs hand-poured recycled wax with one-of-a-kind vessels — sourced, chosen, and filled entirely by hand. Each scent is selected to suit the vessel it lives in. That pairing is made by instinct, and it's never repeated.
When a vintage candle is gone, it's gone. There is no restock, no duplicate, no second version. Just one vessel, one scent, one story.

Refillable Tubs
Fall in love with your vessel, then keep it forever. When the wax is done, send it back — we'll clean it, refill it with your chosen scent, and return it to you, ready to burn again. The refillable tubs include our Vintage range - a variety of vintage vessels for your choosing.

Wax Melts
Individually wrapped and labelled, each wax melt fills a room with something beautiful for around four hours. A small, considered luxury.
Lux Linen Pods
Hang up in your wardrobe or add to your drawer in an organza bag to fragrance your clothing or linen.
